"The Christian cannot be satisfied so long as any human
activity is either opposed to Christianity or out of all
connection with Christianity. Christianity must pervade not
merely all nations, but also all of human thought. The
Christian, therefore, cannot be indifferent to any branch of
earnest human endeavour. It must be brought into some relation
to the Gospel. It must be studied either in order to be
demonstrated as false, or else in order to be made useful in
advancing the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom must be advanced not
merely extensively, but also intensively. The Church must seek
to conquer not merely every man for Christ, but also the whole
of man."
- J. Gresham Machan (1912)
The Constantinopolitan Creed, or
Creed of 150 Fathers, commonly known as the
Nicene Creed (381 A.D.)
We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, of all things visible and invisible;
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all time, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not created, of one essence
as the father; through whom all things came into being; Who
for us men and because of our salvation came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and
became human. He was crucified also for us under Pontius
Pilate; and suffered and was buried; and rose the third day,
according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and
sits on the right hand of the Father, and will come again with
glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom shall have
no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and life-giver, Who proceeds
from the Father, Who is worshipped and glorified together with
the Father and Son, Who spoke through the prophets; and we
believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We
confess one baptism for the remission of sins. We look forward
to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
The Definition of Chalcedon (451 A.D.)
Therefore, following the holy fathers, we all with one accord
teach men to acknowledge one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus
Christ, at once complete in Godhead and complete in manhood,
truly God and truly man, consisting also of a reasonable soul
and body; of one substance with the Father as regards his
Godhead, and at the same time of one substance with us as
regards his manhood; like us in all respects, apart from sin;
as regards his Godhead, begotten of the Father before the ages,
but as yet as regards his manhood begotten, for us men and for
our salvation, of Mary the Virgin, the God-Bearer, one and the
same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, recognised in two
natures, without confusion, without change, without division,
without separation; the distinction of natures being in no way
annulled by the union, but rather the characteristics of each
nature being preserved and coming together to form one person
and subsistence, not as parted or separated into two persons,
but one and the same Son and Only-begotten God the Word, Lord
Jesus Christ; even as the prophets from earliest times spoke of
him, and our Lord Jesus Christ himself taught us, and the creed
of the Fathers has handed down to us.
